Romani people worldwide celebrate International Romani Day
8. April International Roma Day, celebrated today by thousands of Roma in Europe, has also been celebrated in Kosovo, supported by the Kosovo Government.
On this day is also celebrating fortieth anniversary since the International Gipsy Committee organized the first World Romani Congress on 8 April, 1971. is the first attempt of Roma citizens to meet together and to solve problems faced by members of this community throughout Europe.
This year Office for Community Affairs /Office of Prime Minister celebrated the International Roma Day. On that occasion it was organized a conference attended by senior officials, leading national institutions, international organizations and diplomatic corps in Kosovo.
The conference was welcomed by Senior Advisor of the Prime Minister / Director of the Office on Community Affairs, Mr. Srdjan Popovic, who pointed out that the Kosovo Government will be fully committed to solve the problems that communities are facing with.
Minister for Communities and Returns, Mr. Radojica Tomic, said that he is honored to participate in this conference, because this day is considered as day which unites the people of Kosovo, regardless of ethnic, cultural or religious background.
Relations between state and citizens are regulated by the Constitution and laws of Kosovo, and the Kosovo Government remains committed to its obligations to ensure that the provisions contained in the Constitution regarding the protection of community rights, provide equal access of Roma into society, as equal citizens of Kosovo.
Representatives of the Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Education, Science and Technology are also welcomed all participants.
Engagement of Kosovo Government was highly estimated by the Deputy International Civilian Representative in Kosovo, Christopher Rouen, "The Roma community has a long history in Kosovo which is also a contribution to the ethnic, linguistic and religious diversity. Effective participation and contribution of Roma is an integral part of further development of a democratic and multiethnic society in Kosovo, "said Mr. Rouen.
President of Roma Party, Mr. Zulfi Merda, as well as representatives of civil society organizations stressed out importance of supporting process of integration and improvement of life conditions for all communities, especially Roma community and problems they are facing in their every day life.
